Dear Commander Community,
This week marks the beginning of Asian and Pacific Islander Month, which is an opportunity for us to celebrate and honor the incredible contributions that people from Asian and Pacific Islander descent have made to our society and community. We must remember that INCLUSION is one of our PRIDE values, and that it is our civic and Commander duty to be inclusive and celebratory of people who are from different cultures and backgrounds than our own every day of the year. Diversity of minds, bodies, and souls makes our Community STRONGER. Check out more information about Asian and Pacific Islander month HERE and HERE. Additionally, this article emphasizes the importance of correctly pronouncing names of our colleagues and peers. I hope you enjoy the resources and share key ideas that you learn from the readings with others.
This week is Teacher Appreciation Week! Please take some time to send our teachers a special note of appreciation, email, or face-to-face conversation about how they have positively influenced your life. If you would like to donate food, snacks, drinks, paper plates, cups, etc. for breakfast or lunch for teachers any day this week, please email Tiffany Almon at tiffany_almon@dpsk12.org.
Many of you may have watched the news stories on the JFK Baseball field, and I want to assure our community that Dr. Brewer and I have been collaborating with the district and our families to ensure that our student athletes will have a newly renovated field for the 22-23 season. The fields will close for renovations on June 1st, 2022. We are deeply saddened that our Senior Baseball Players did not have the opportunity to play on their home field this season.
Summer learning opportunities for students, please check them out here.

Four Kennedy students, Blake Herivel, Galaxie Galindo, Mitchell Medina and Xiolani Vargas-Esquivel, participated in the Colorado Uplift Tijuana, Mexico trip to serve underprivileged families. These students are involved in the CO Uplift Advanced Leadership Program. The Advanced Leadership program develops upperclassman high school students who learn service leadership and practically apply it in their community through projects and trips. The eight-month program culminated in a trip to Tijuana, Mexico where Uplift partnered with Homes of Hope to build homes for hard-working, needy families.

This year, Uplift fundraised enough money to take 70 board members, staff and students to build THREE homes for underserved families! Students from Kennedy, West, Lincoln, George Washington and North came together to work hard and serve this community. It was a wonderful experience for everyone involved!

This weekend 9 students traveled with Ms O to Washington DC to explore more about our nation's government and history. They spent 4 days exploring the National Mall, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Mount Vernon, and more! It was an incredible experience and we hope to offer this travel opportunity to students every two years from here on out!
