Dear Commander Community,

I am sure that the most recent COVID Update communication alarmed and potentially triggered fear in your households. I would like to reinforce that all but one of these cases occurred remotely. In addition, we are adhering to the health and safety guardrails as outlined below to limit the spread of COVID within our school. Dr. Steve Federico from Denver Health explains, “The mitigation strategies in schools work [limit the spread of the virus]: masking, staying home when we are sick, and getting as many people fully vaccinated and boosted as possible”. Students above the age of 16 are now eligible to receive boosters; and, our JFK Denver Health clinic provides free vaccinations and boosters. If you have concerns or questions about DPS’s current health and safety and/or remote learning policies, please email our School Board at board@dpsk12.org

Your feedback during this difficult time is critical to the success of our students. Please take a moment to complete this feedback survey and please get involved by either joining our Commander Connection PTSA (email lisa1115@hotmail.com or laurentz_gilmore@dpsk12.net) or by attending our upcoming Commander Conversation virtual town hall on 1/26/22 from 5 – 6pm here.

REMINDERS:

Electronic report cards will be sent out no later than 1/13/22.

Check out this slide deck for details about our Cell Phone, Tardy, and Truancy Policy for Semester 2, Winter Athletics, and a visual of the schedule for the first week of Semester 2.

COVID UPDATE:

It is our priority to keep you informed of incidents related to safety. We want to make you aware that this week, we have 18 students or staff members that have been diagnosed with COVID-19. We have notified those people who were in close contact with these individuals.

Each case of COVID-19 is interviewed by public health. As part of this public health investigation:

  • The people diagnosed are being kept home from school until they are no longer infectious.

  • The people’s activities when they could have spread COVID-19 were assessed.

If you have any concerns about your health, we encourage you to contact the Denver Health School Based Health Center at 303-602-8958 (or your primary care provider) for further evaluation and possible testing.

Have a Commander Kind of Week!

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Health and Safety Protocols:

  • Wear a mask over your nose and mouth

    1. Masks will be required for all students, visitors, and staff while in all DPS schools and buildings, regardless of vaccination status. This mask requirement includes times when staff are meeting without students, regardless of vaccination status.

    2. Masks will not be required outside, since the risk of COVID transmission is significantly lower outdoors.

    3. Monitor who you eat lunch with and eat lunch outdoors when possible.

  • Monitor your symptoms, stay home, and get a COVID test if you are feeling sick

  • If a student is in close contact with someone who has contracted the COVID-19 Virus, Nurse Shirley (shirley_sorensen@dpsk12.org) will contact the student and their family.  See COVID-19 Exposure decision tree here for more information.

  • Staff and students are exempt from quarantine if you are:

    • Previously positive in the past 90 days and are without symptoms.

    • Both parties were wearing a mask properly over the mouth and nose at the time of exposure and without symptoms and maintained 3 foot distance between individuals for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24 hour period.
