November is Native American Heritage Month, and this is a time to truly reflect on how we can be more inclusive and celebratory of our beautiful differences and to dedicate ourselves to thinking deeply about the positive impact and effects our Native American community members have had on our Nation. Check out these resources from PBS and from The Library of Congress to learn more about the remarkable contributions of the Native American People.
Huge shout out to our Student Board of Education for hosting the Denver School Board Candidates for a debate on Wednesday, these students facilitated a professional and informative debate and question/answer session that illuminated SBOE’s drive and passion for taking command of their civic responsibilities. The live stream is posted on our JFK Facebook page and SBOE is featured in this Chalkbeat article.
WE NEED YOUR INPUT!! Please read this letter and provide feedback HERE on whether you believe we should shift our 22-23 School Year START TIMES in preparation for the mandated bell time shift during the 23-24 School Year: all DPS middle and high schools will begin after 8:20 am during the 23-24 School Year.
Finally, JFK has been scheduled for the next phase of 2020 General Obligation Bond’s Quality Learning Environment – School Determined Funds program. “This school-determined, highly visible and student-focused program will provide pre-approved dollars to support transformational facility improvements to support the energizing of your school environment. Scope development will occur this fall, with construction and/or new furniture orders scheduled to complete by the end of summer 2022.” Our Design Advisory Group is looking for student input on the project and at least 3 students to join our group to make critical decisions about the space that will be transformed. Commander Conversations Reschedule: We have rescheduled last week's Commander Conversation session to this Wednesday, November 3rd at 5 PM.
This session is very important as we will be surveying the group on specific feedback that will impact the future state of our school. If you are interested in being part of this focus group and giving concrete feedback on the information we present, please join us using the following information:

We will be asking about how to improve our school culture, how we can improve classroom instruction, as well as how we can improve our systems for grading and helping students in advanced math classes.
This week the English and Spanish sessions will meet together and we may incorporate breakout rooms so everyone gets a chance to share their insight.

Senior Class Photo: We have received approval to host our Senior Class of Photo in our gym! We will be hosting this event for ALL seniors on Tuesday, November 2nd at 8:45 AM. Students will need to wear their masks until it is time to take the photo. They will be permitted to remove their masks for a few seconds at the time of the photo.
Students must wear their Senior Shirts for the photo and can still purchase these with the treasurer this week (Tuesday – Friday). Shirts are $15.00 a piece!

Code2College: This program equips students with both professional and technical skills, and prepares them for a variety of in-demand, high paying technical careers. Their application is currently open and will close on December 1, 2021. Check out their program flyers: English and Spanish.

The Annual College Fair is happening in the JFK gym on 11/4 @9:30-10:30am for all Juniors and Seniors. We will have 37 colleges represented from all over the nation!

Voz y Corazon art group takes place every Tuesday after school. We are in need of student participants! If you know any students who love art and could benefit from building connections, please encourage them to attend, or reach out to Shea Caballero for more information.

STARS Mentoring is officially kicking off! We have a wonderful group of students who have volunteered to work with a select group of Grant Ranch and BVIS middle school students as peer mentors for the rest of the school year!

Covid Cases: It is our priority to keep you informed of incidents related to safety. We want to make you aware that 4 students or staff members have been diagnosed with COVID-19 at JFK this week. We have notified those people who were in close contact with these individuals.
Each case of COVID-19 is interviewed by public health. As part of this public health investigation:
If you have any concerns about your health, we encourage you to contact the Denver Health School Based Health Center at 303-602-8958 (or your primary care provider) for further evaluation and possible testing.

Protocols: If students are masked and vaccinated while at school, students only need to quarantine if they start experiencing symptoms. Staff and students should monitor who they are in close contact with when masks are off, especially during lunch time. Eat outside whenever possible. Please note, students are not required to get vaccinated to return in person. However, we highly encourage our students to get vaccinated. If we can continue to increase the number of people aged 12 and older who get the vaccine, we can get closer to herd immunity, and resume the fun activities that make life as a high school student so memorable.
