A Message From Principal Almon

Dear Commanders,

This past week we kicked off Black History Month with advisory lessons, decorating our hallways with posters that celebrate Black leaders, and the Black Student Alliance planning for the Black History Month Celebration on 2/24/23. As we engage in learning experiences and events that highlight and celebrate the incredible contributions that our Black Community has made to our society and lives, I invite you to think about this quote by President Barack Obama: 


“Change will not come if we wait for some other person, or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” 


Commanders, I invite you all to be the change that we seek by getting involved in the Principal’s Advisory Committee and participating in exciting events that are coming up like Wish Week, Spirit Days, and the Valentine’s Day Dance. See below for more information about other upcoming events and opportunities to get involved and make positive change for our community.

    • Join us to learn about available community resources, followed by an informational session on fentanyl featuring a panel of experts who will answer questions from the community and discuss how to educate yourselves and your children. Interpretations in Spanish and Vietnamese available and dinner provided, as well as coloring sheets for children.

    • ** Particpate to be entered into a drawing to win some awesome prizes! Additionally, all attendees will recieve free entry into the JFK Boys Basketball Pack the House game vs. Northfield at 7:00 pm!

Vaping Prevention – Resources for Parents 

Parents play a critical role in preventing vaping, so make time to talk with your child today. This handout has great tips for starting that conversation. Catch My Breath has great resources including a Parent Training Video (also in Spanish) and a Parent Toolkit with information on how to support your child, how to spot a vape, six signs your child may be vaping and other tools for tackling the vaping epidemic. For students needing vaping intervention, MyLifeMyQuit, is a free, confidential quit line. Additional resources for adolescents using substances can be found here.

     Expiration of Enhanced Efforts Related to RSV

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) continues to monitor viral respiratory diseases and associated outbreaks. However, the steep and early increase in RSV hospitalizations appears to have significantly slowed. 

It is still important to continue to implement standard illness mitigation strategies. These include:

  • Having staff and students stay home when they are sick.
  • Use the “How Sick is Too Sick” document (also available in Spanish) for guidance on returning to school after an illness.
  • Practice frequent hand washing.
  • Stay current with flu and COVID-19 vaccinations.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow.
  • Consider masking if exhibiting any symptoms.

DPS has been seeing a rise in the number of misused and malicious reporting on our Safe2Tell safety tip lines. The Safe2Tell tip line is not a resource for general complaints and should only be used in cases of emergency. False reports are a felony, and subject to criminal penalties according to Senate Bill 21-081. If you have a complaint, please reach out directly to the JFK leadership team directly for more information on how you can receive help or new accommodations.
