A Message From Principal Almon


Dear Commanders,


Celebrations like Lunar New Year and Black History Month remind me that life is short, but impact is lasting. 


Commanders, I applaud your impact! You strive toward excellence, work in service of collective success, and lead with humanity. These habits of professionalism are embodied by all my role models and mentors, past and present — CJ Madam Walker, Michelle Obama, andNguyen Thi Phuong Thao.


The work of researcher James Clear shows that these habits do not occur by accident. He writes that in order to make a big impact, you must “Be the designer of your world and not merely the consumer of it.” At JFK, our February PRIDE value of professionalism begins with the way we orient ourselves toward our work. I am grateful to work among designers.

Shout out to our Honor Platoon who brought home several trophies for top performances in San Antonio last weekend, to our Unified Basketball Team who showed great sportsmanship at their first tournament, and to our Black Student Alliance and Native American Advisory for collaborating to plan Black History Month Events. Shout out to the parents who showed so much support at our Black Family Alliance Meeting and for those parents who have signed up to join our PTSA, Commander Connection!

JFK has partnered with the Make-A-Wish foundation to help kids like Hunter achieve their dreams! Our goal is to raise $3000. Take a moment to read a little bit about Hunter and his journey, followed by the list of activities planned for Wish Week! Help us reach our goal by donating Here!

Attention Juniors!  TAKE ACTION  to register for the Optional SAT Essay!

If you are planning to attend a college that requires the SAT Essay in addition to the regular SAT test, you can opt in to take the Essay portion of the SAT for free on the same day you are scheduled to take the SAT at school, April 12th, 2023.  
See the linked flyer for directions you must follow to sign up.  We cannot sign up for you at JFK.

Shout out to our Unified Basketball Team  who had their first Basketball Tournament this week!  They did great!  The athletes gave it their all, had fun and showed good sportsmanship.  Special thanks to Coach Alvis and the Special Education department for making this happen!

Take Command of Your Health and
 Safety!

As mentioned in previous newsletters, during Spring Semester, JFK Social Workers are pushing in to all science classes to provide drug education.

  • January’s topics covered marijuana and nicotine vaping (e-cigarettes).

  • February’s topic will be prescription drugs, with a focus on opioids including fentanyl.

  • March’s focus will be on alcohol.

Students were very engaged in the materials and we are hopeful this education will assist our youth in making positive decisions around substance use. For more information, please email Ms. Annie the JFK social worker at anne_walden-newman@dpsk12.net.

Expiration of Enhanced Efforts Related to RSV

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) continues to monitor viral respiratory diseases and associated outbreaks. However, the steep and early increase in RSV hospitalizations appears to have significantly slowed. 

It is still important to continue to implement standard illness mitigation strategies. These include:

  • Having staff and students stay home when they are sick.
  • Use the “How Sick is Too Sick” document (also available in Spanish) for guidance on returning to school after an illness.
  • Practice frequent hand washing.
  • Stay current with flu and COVID-19 vaccinations.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow.
  • Consider masking if exhibiting any symptoms.

DPS has been seeing a rise in the number of misused and malicious reporting on our Safe2Tell safety tip lines. The Safe2Tell tip line is not a resource for general complaints and should only be used in cases of emergency. False reports are a felony, and subject to criminal penalties according to Senate Bill 21-081. If you have a complaint, please reach out directly to the JFK leadership team directly for more information on how you can receive help or new accommodations.
