A Message From Principal Almon


Dear Commanders,

In honor of the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I want to share one of his most influential quotes on education: “Intelligence plus character — that is the goal of true education.” This quote makes me think about the character traits of successful students. Successful students own their educational experience, take responsibility for themselves, have self-awareness, and know the value of building genuine relationships with others, and believe in themselves. Students, I challenge you to attend every class every day, to take risks by asking questions when something doesn’t seem quite right or you need more information, and be inclusive of peers that you may not know or who may not share a similar background. 


Families, hard copy report cards were distributed through advisement class this past Thursday. Please support your student’s educational journey by checking Schoology and Parent Portal regularly. Congratulations to our Senior Swimmers (Alexandra Ronquillo-Guevara, Xiolani Vargas-Esquivel, Venicia Vargas-Esquivel) and  Boys’ Basketball players (Shamar Bukar, Ron Gallegos, Diego López ,Elias Montes and Isaac Sisneros), for exhibiting character and intelligence and embodying PRIDE values as student athletes.

Free After School STEM Program


Students of Color in Technology (SOCIT), is a non-profit after-school STEM program founded in 2016. Every month, we teach and empower 3rd to 12th grade minority inner city students across the Denver Metro area through Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) workshops. We’ve reached over 250 students with a wide variety of STEM topics covered, including many that are not reviewed in school.

This year, we are more excited than ever to ensure that we continue to prepare young leaders to pursue STEM education and become socially responsible leaders in our society.

We remain committed to preparing the next generation of leaders to solve problems through innovative thinking, creativity, STEM, and fun!

Take Command of Your Health and
 Safety!


As mentioned in previous Family Communicators, during the Spring Semester our social workers will be pushing into all Science classes to provide drug education. Topics will include but are not limited to vaping, marijuana, alcohol, and fentanyl. This education will also teach students how to access mental health supports, as we know drug use can be a sign of mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. This programming will begin next week (January 17th & January 18th) focusing on marijuana and vaping/nicotine. 
To opt out your student from this program or for more information, please email Ms. Annie the JFK social worker at anne_walden-newman@dpsk12.net.

Denver Health School Based Health Center

Denver Health School Based Health Centers are offering $30 visa gift cards to any DPS Student or Sibling who gets there Covid-19 vaccine!  These are the requirements:

  • DPS Students or DPS Sibling

  • Must receive Covid-19 vaccine at the SBHC site during a provider visit

  • Visa is gifted for EVERY Covid vaccine dose (1st, 2nd, booster) – However Lake Middle school only has booster doses at this time – We have the bivalent Pfizer booster – this can only be given after the primary series.

  • Multiple visa gift cards can be gifted to the same family – example: 2 siblings are scheduled – family is gifted one $60 visa card or 2 -$30 visa gift cards.

  • Funds for additional family members receiving doses will be loaded to the initial visa gift card provided two weeks after visit completion.
