Commander Communicator

A Message From Principal Almon

Happy New Year Commander Family,

As we kick off this new year and second semester, I want you to know that our students’ social-emotional well being and excellence through achievement is top of mind for me. When we think about happiness and well-being, we often think about short-term bursts of joy like buying that new pair of Jordans, sleeping in on a weekend, or spending time with that special someone. In fact, happiness and well-being are more than that. What makes us happy isn’t simply short-lived positive emotions. We need more. Researchers have found that happy people have 5 things in their life: Positive emotions + Engagement + Meaning + Relationships + Achievement. (adapted from Seligman 2011)

Commanders, when we filter this research on happiness and well-being through the lens of our PRIDE values, we can align it to our value of EXCELLENCE through committing to Positive emotions, Engagement, Meaning, Relationships, and Achievement.

Excellence through Engagement means showing up and showing out for your classes. Our attendance goal for all students is a 95% attendance, that means that you must attend 93.5of the 98.5 school days in semester 2. This also means that you have 5 days of wiggle room if you happen to get sick, have an emergency, or are observing a religious holiday. Show up to all of your classes, ask questions when you are confused, attend after school tutoring, office hours during lunch or after school, email your teachers when you need extra support, take risks, and dive into the learning. If you don’t see a connection or find meaning in the learning, ask your teacher to help you make these connections. Finally, attend advisory and set goals.

Parents and families, we will be sending out electronic copies of report cards next week, and our Collaborative School Committee will meet and we will have a brief Town Hall immediately following on Wednesday 1/11/23 in room 103 or online HERE. See the Semester 2 School Culture slides the students were shown during advisory HERE. Please read below for important updates, events, and information.

Have a Commander Kind of Day!
