Hello students and family of Kennedy High School! I am Shannon Bockstahler and I am the new English Language Development teacher. I am incredibly excited to join the community and most especially excited to meet and work with your students.
I earned my Bachelor’s degree in English with an Emphasis on Secondary Education in 2012 from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. From there I became a teacher. This is my 8th year teaching all together. My first year I worked as a long-term substitute teacher at Doherty High School in Colorado Springs teaching Senior Mythology and 10th Grade English. I spent the next three years teaching 6th grade Language Arts at Jack Swigert Aerospace Academy, also in Colorado Springs. While there I helped train teachers to better integrate their 1 to 1 laptops within their instruction and better support their students in 21st Century Skills. From there I chose to move to Denver to be closer to family. I then taught 7th grade Language Arts at West Leadership Academy for a year and then two years of ELD for grades 9-12.
I’m deeply passionate about stories both fictional and true. Every summer I go to Denver Pop Culture Con (formerly Denver Comic Con). I’ve only dressed in costume once (called cosplay) and it’s the most amazing experience ever for anyone who’s a fan of popular culture. If I had the joy of going to Hogwarts I would have been in House Hufflepuff; I would have fought for House Stark in Game of Thrones; Peter Parker and Tony Stark (Spiderman and Iron Man) would be my best hero friends in the Avengers; and Donkey Kong in the Nintendo universe is my Mario Kart racing buddy. In my free time I love reading; writing fantasy novels and I hope to one day be published; playing and writing for Dungeons and Dragons both at my kitchen table and with friends online across the country; hiking in the mountains; bicycling along the Highline Canal; and playing video games on my Playstation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch. I’m very much an indoor kid and a proud nerd!
