Dear Students, Parents, and fellow JFK community members,

Welcome to John F. Kennedy High School! My name is Keith Roybal. My last name is spelled R-O-Y-B-A-L, and pronounced “Roy-ball.” For some unknown reason, my ancestors only spelled my last name with one “L.” Go figure. Nonetheless, I would like you to address me as “Mr. Roybal,” please. Of course, some students call me “Mister” or “Mister R” or “Roybal,” and I am comfortable with those nicknames too. Thank you for respecting me and calling me the appropriate name; I will show you the same respect and address you with the name you prefer.

I am looking forward to being your Social Studies teacher this year. You might be asking the question, “who is this teacher and should I trust him?” Let me put your mind at ease. I have over 20 years of teaching experience in the Denver Public Schools (DPS), and I have taught many different subjects and age groups. I look forward to teaching you this school year. Please know that I value you, respect you, and support you. As a matter of fact, I attended JFK myself as a student, and I graduated in 1991 (please hold your jokes about my old age until we get to know one another better). I remember very distinctly the challenges of being a high school student, so I want to be your advocate, as well as a teacher, thought partner, and support person. I look forward to getting to know you and helping you navigate the world of high school.

When I am not working with all of my wonderful students, I enjoy the outdoors, reading, and hanging out with friends and family. I have a wife, one son who is a Firefighter on Schriever Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, and 3 beautiful grandchildren (remember, no jokes about me being an old grandpa, okay? At least not yet). I feel so lucky that I get to visit them often and enjoy their company.

In conclusion, together, you and I are going to have a great educational experience this semester and school year. We will certainly study Social Studies content, and additionally, I will support you with any life skills that empower you to be the best person you can be.

Again, welcome to JFK!

Sincerely,
Mr. Keith Roybal
