A Message From Principal Almon

Dear Commander Family,


I want to take a moment to celebrate our students. Not only are they resilient and empathetic, but they also look out for one another and advocate for each other even in times of great adversity and trauma. We care deeply about the safety of our students and want to work together with our students and families to keep all of our students  healthy and thriving; therefore, I encourage families and students to take time together to carefully read this one-pager that contains information regarding the dangers of Fentanyl. Additionally, we will be providing in person experiences to educate our students and families on Fentanyl use and overdose prevention. 


We have increased supervision in our student parking lot and are prohibiting students from hanging out in their cars while on school grounds. If your car is not registered through our Treasurer, you must bring your license, proof of insurance, and proof of registration to Marylou Diaz in the main office. Parking permits are free of charge.


I received permission from the family of the student involved in the incident that led to a medical transport on the morning of 12/1/22 to share that the student is in stable condition.  If any students need an extra layer of support or someone to talk to as they process the incident that took place on Thursday please connect with a trusted Kennedy staff member who will be able to connect you with a member of our mental health team. 


If you know of anyone who may be using or distributing fentanyl, please report to Safe 2 Tell or to a trusted Kennedy staff member. We are stronger together!

Ways to Stay Safe & Healthy this Flu Season

Respiratory viruses, including Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), flu, and COVID-19 are spreading across Colorado and the nation. Protect your loved ones, the community, and our health care system by:

  • Getting vaccinated. Both flu and COVID-19 have effective, safe vaccines. Anyone 6 months and older can get vaccinated for flu and COVID-19. It is safe to get the vaccines together.

  • Seeing or calling a health care provider or doctor before going to a busy emergency department when you or your child has respiratory symptoms. Your provider can help you determine the best ways to manage symptoms and when it is important to be seen in the clinic, urgent care, or emergency department.

  • Staying home when sick, including not visiting or interacting with people who may be at higher risk, including older adults, young children, and infants. What might feel like a mild cold for one person can be very serious for another person. This is important to preventing the spread of viruses and causing outbreaks, which put additional strain on the hospital system.

  • Wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or use hand sanitizer with 60% alcohol.

  • Covering your nose and mouth with a tissue or upper arm sleeve when you cough or sneeze, throw away the tissue after you use it, and clean hands as instructed above.

  • Cleaning potentially contaminated surfaces, like doorknobs, tables, handrails, etc.

  • Avoiding sharing cups, eating utensils, and touching your face with unwashed hands. 

***COVID-19***

Anyone aged 5 years and older who has completed a COVID-19 primary vaccine series should get an omicron vaccine to increase their protection against the dominant subvariants circulating in Colorado right now. People should get their omicron vaccine at least two months after their most recent dose — either their completed primary series or third (booster) dose. The Denver Health School-Based Clinic at John F. Kennedy has both COVID-19 boosters and Flu shots available Free for all students. Make an appointment or stop by the clinic.
