Commander Communicator – Week of 12/6/21

Dear Commander Community,

I’d like to begin this week’s communicator by asking that all Commanders take a moment of silence for one of our students who lost their life this past week. Our condolences and prayers go out to all members of our community that are grieving, especially the family who wishes to maintain privacy.

Students and parents, please look for an email from Gayla Power that includes your on track to graduate status. In this email, you will find your data attendance, grades, and if you’ve met competency in math and literacy. If you have questions about this data, please ask your advisement teacher, your counselor, or me. Take advantage of the many opportunities we are providing this week to get on track or stay on track with your coursework including: office hours with teachers by appointment, Cocoa and Cram on Wednesday from 2;50 – 4 PM, and after school tutoring on Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30 – 4 PM.  Read below for important COVID updates and the communication sent on Friday afternoon regarding why we closed lunch on Friday.

It is our priority to keep you informed of incidents related to safety. We want to make you aware that this week, we have 9 students or staff members that have been diagnosed with COVID-19. We have notified those people who were in close contact with these individuals.

Each case of COVID-19 is interviewed by public health. As part of this public health investigation:

  • The people diagnosed are being kept home from school until they are no longer infectious.
  • The people’s activities when they could have spread COVID-19 were assessed.

If you have any concerns about your health, we encourage you to contact the Denver Health School Based Health Center at 303-602-8958 (or your primary care provider) for further evaluation and possible testing.

CLOSED LUNCH on Friday 12/3:

We received a tip right before lunch on 12/3 and took an extra layer of precaution during lunch due to this information received. We were informed that residual activity from the physical altercation that occurred on 12/2 may occur on the exterior perimeter of the school during lunch. Our utmost priority is always student safety; therefore, we made a decision to secure our perimeter. All students were instructed to stay on campus during the lunch hour and had access to the black top for fresh air and a place to eat socially distanced.

Our cafeteria was prepared to serve an increased number of students and we increased staff and DPS Safety and Security supervision during the lunch hour.

Physical altercation is never the appropriate method to solve problems. Students, if you are experiencing bullying or feel unsafe for any reason, please reach out to a trusted adult.  We have counselors, student advisors, restorative approach coordinators, school psychologists and social workers who are ever-present, well trained and highly responsive with any concern that arises for our students. We are here to ensure you have a positive and productive high school experience, and this begins by attending to your basic need to feel safe. Please see our Counseling site for all the resources we have available to our students.

Have a Commander Kind of Week!

Teachers will give students raffle tickets in exchange for participation, which can be redeemed for hot cocoa.

·         Students can request an appointment with their counselor here: School Counselor Appointment Form.

If students are masked and vaccinated while at school, students only need to quarantine if they start experiencing symptoms. Staff and students should monitor who they are in close contact with when masks are off, especially during lunch time. Eat outside whenever possible. See COVID-19 Exposure decision tree here for more information.

Please note, students are not required to get vaccinated to return in person. However, we highly encourage our students to get vaccinated. If we can continue to increase the number of people aged 12 and older who get the vaccine, we can get closer to herd immunity, and resume the fun activities that make life as a high school student so memorable. Check out this information regarding the COVID-19 vaccination and the sites located all-around Denver.

Please read this information from our Superintendent, Dr. Marrero, for details about vaccinations, mask guidance, and safety measures.
