Dear Commander Community,

Monday is Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a day for us to recognize and celebrate the impact and influence Indigenous Peoples have had on our country throughout history. See President Biden’s Presidential Proclamation of Indigenous Peoples’ Day HERE.

Parents, we need your help with teaching our students to create healthy habits when using technology. Encourage your student to unplug from their cell phones and their Chromebooks at night; and, store their devices in an area away from where they sleep. Additionally, refrain from calling and texting your child during the school day. Our teachers are working hard to engage our students in relevant and rigorous learning experiences; and, it causes a significant disruption when students are on their phones and express that they must talk to their parent/guardian. If there is an emergency and you need to contact your child right away, call our main office and we will get you connected asap.

Sign up for Virtual Parent/Guardian-teacher Conferences on Wednesday and Thursday night from 4 – 7 PM HERE. You can find a video with directions for signing up by following the link.

Wednesday is Super Test Day! All students will have an opportunity to get on track or stay on track. Students will receive an email from Gayla Power with their testing location. All students should arrive by 7:20 am and head to their testing location by 7:25 am. See below for details:

UPDATES
  • New Food Trucks: Starting on Tuesday, October 12th, we will have new food trucks joining us during our lunch period. Students will have a variety of options that you can view here

  • New Mural: JFK was selected to receive a mural through the Urban Art Fund. We were grateful to have been chosen to receive a magnificent art piece for the exterior of our school. Rodrick Smith and Marina Pauda were chosen by staff to be featured in our mural that was painted by Thomas “Detour” Evans on the retaining wall on Dartmouth and Lamar. We are so proud to have been part of this project and are thrilled with the result of the mural.

  • Student Job Opportunity: Lakewood Senior Living has several part-time positions open in our community and are actively seeking to fill them with local high school students. The shifts would be 4-7 pm Monday-Friday and 11a-6 pm or 4-7pm on Saturdays. If you have any students that might be interested in working with seniors professionally when they graduate, this would be a good opportunity to get an idea of what that would look like. They are a 100% independent living community. Apply here.
  • Parent Teacher Conferences:  Parent Teacher Conferences will be held virtually this year on October 13th and 14th from 4-7 PM. These are a great opportunity to get to know your teacher's expectations for what success looks like in their class. You can find those links here

  • Fall Break: There will be no school for students on October 15th and 18th. This is considered Fall Break for students as Teachers spend those two days taking part in professional learning. We highly encourage Commanders to use Fall Break as an opportunity to get caught up in their classes.

FUTURE CENTER

  • Please read this week's newsletter from the Future Center here.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

If students are masked and vaccinated while at school, students only need to quarantine if they start experiencing symptoms. Staff and students should monitor who they are in close contact with when masks are off, especially during lunch time. Eat outside whenever possible. See COVID-19 Exposure decision tree here for more information.

Please note, students are not required to get vaccinated to return in person. However, we highly encourage our students to get vaccinated. If we can continue to increase the number of people aged 12 and older who get the vaccine, we can get closer to herd immunity, and resume the fun activities that make life as a high school student so memorable. Check out this information regarding the COVID-19 vaccination and the sites located all-around Denver.

Please read this information from our Superintendent, Dr. Marrero, for details about vaccinations, mask guidance, and safety measures.
