Commander Communicator – Week of 05/10/21

I will start this message with a quote from Maya Angelou about all the Magnificent Mamas: “To describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power. Or the climbing, falling colors of a rainbow.”

Wishing all the mothers out there in our Commander Community so much  love and respect this weekend. I hope that you all recognize that they are a force of nature, a beacon of wisdom, an endless source of strength, and you deserve to be showered with all the good stuff all day!

Important Updates about the 21-22 School Year:

As we plan for the 2021-22 school year, we’re optimistic that classrooms will look a lot more like they did prior to the pandemic. We anticipate that all students who choose Kennedy in-person learning will attend school from 7:30 – 2:30 pm each day on a traditional block schedule with Monday being a Commander day and Tuesday through Friday being a Green/Blue rotation. Students will have an 8 period schedule, with on track Juniors given the option of having one off period and on track Seniors given the option of having two off periods. We are also excited to announce a FREE year-long SAT Preparation Course offered to all interested rising Juniors. This is a unique opportunity for our Kennedy Class of 2023 that will increase confidence, decrease test-anxiety, increase college readiness, and increase scholarship opportunities for our students. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity and are a rising Junior click here and sign up here

Here at Kennedy, we are excited to have a more consistent and predictable school year in 2021-22.  We know that there is no substitute for in-person learning experiences and interpersonal interactions. Below are just a few of the offerings and benefits that students will have at Kennedy next year.

  • Opportunities to build strong relationships with peers and staff through our Anchor Cohort Advisory programming, and the Asset Program for building stress and anxiety management skills through their classes
  • A whole child approach to social and emotional support, with a robust Counseling and Mental Health Team
  • A strong variety of course offerings in all content areas with an emphasis on supporting our students in identifying their career and/or college pathways and achieving their goals
  • A dynamic comprehensive high school experience including the revival of our amazing Kennedy traditions like the homecoming parade, school plays, community events; as well as, in-person participation in clubs, organizations, and athletics

Although we do not have all of the answers about all the details of next school year, we can ensure that DPS and Kennedy will continue working closely with our community health partners in our preparation for the return to school in the fall and realize some of the health protocols we have become accustomed to — wearing a mask, not gathering in large groups — may still be in place, at least to start the year.

We also know a segment of our families may want to continue with remote learning next year. To best support these students,  DPS is offering an option to enroll in full-time remote learning for students in grades K-12.

Families who would like to enroll their student in the remote-learning program for the entirety of the 2021-22 school year should complete the Learning Option Selection form on the Parent Portal, or call the school’s front office, between May 10 and June 4. Instructions for enrolling your student into Denver Online School are found HERE.

DPS will offer full-time remote learning next year through a more centralized, consistent approach.

  • For grades 6-12, remote learning will be offered through Denver Online High School, a long-time DPS school with a track record of success in remote instruction.
  • Remote learning for both elementary and secondary grades will be a combination of live remote instruction and self-paced assignments.

Families whose students will be returning to full-time, in-person learning next year do not need to take any action, and their students will automatically be enrolled in in-person learning at their assigned school.

Families looking for more information can review a detailed FAQ about what next year will look like for both in-person and remote learning. For additional assistance, call the Family And Community Engagement (FACE) Helpline at 720-423-3054, or email

See HERE for a video featuring DPS students who have received the COVID-19 vaccine.

Again, we look forward to continuing to serve your student(s) and seeing everyone back in-person for the 2021-22 school year.

Please check out the latest DPS Weekly for updates on vaccination sites for DPS students 16 and older and their families, health and safety protocols, and mental health supports for our community.

Cases: Dear Kennedy Community,

It is our priority to keep you informed of incidents related to safety. We want to make you aware that as of 5/7/21, 1 student or staff member has been diagnosed with COVID-19. We have notified those people who were in close contact with the individuals.

Each case of COVID-19 is interviewed by public health. As part of this public health investigation:

The person diagnosed is being kept home from school until they are no longer infectious.

The person’s activities when they could have spread COVID-19 were assessed.

The people who were close contacts of the person with COVID-19 are instructed to stay home from school for 10 days after the exposure. This is called quarantine.

If you have any concerns about your health, we encourage you to contact the Denver Health School Based Health Center at 303-602-8958 (or your primary care provider) for further evaluation and possible testing.

Vaccines: Please check out the latest DPS Weekly for updates on vaccination sites for DPS students 16 and older and their families, health and safety protocols, and mental health supports for our communitySee HERE for a video featuring DPS students who have received the COVID-19 vaccine.

Vaccines are offered at NO COST to all DPS students. The more students that get vaccinated against COVID-19 means safer schools for all DPS students. Please click here for more information on how to register.

Here other alternatives for 16 and 17 year olds to get vaccinated.

Same as last week:

Testing: If you would like to sign your student up for a covid-19 test, please do so now. It’s free, fast, and convenient: If you’d like to see the registration process, here’s a video that goes through each step.  If your student has been exposed to COVID-19 or is experiencing symptoms, they must be tested at a COVIDCheck Colorado drive-up testing site.  Please register for that one-time test here:
