Commander Communicator – 5/3/21

Dear Commander Community,

“When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful.”― Malala Yousafzai

As we roll into Asian and Pacific Islander month, let’s collectively be reminded of the powerful and profound impact so many of our Asian and Pacific Islander community members have had and continue to have on our nation and, especially our very own Commanders. Most recently Jennifer Phan Ho and Michelle Hoong represented Kennedy at the FBLA State Leadership conference in the  testing competitions. Check out these resources to learn more about the accomplishments of AAPIs and see HERE for information on how to stand up against hate against our AAPI community members.

Seniors! We loved seeing many of you at the Senior Signing Day on Thursday, and are extremely excited that we have finally been able to announce the final details for graduation. Thank you, immensely for your patience, grace, and collaboration through this process. We cannot wait to make this a memorable graduation for Seniors!

Important Update about the 21-22 School Year:

Here at Kennedy, we are excited to have a more consistent and predictable school year in 2021-22.  Below are just a few of the offerings that students will have at Kennedy next year.

  • Opportunities to build strong relationships with peers and staff through our Anchor Cohort Advisory programming, and the Asset Program for building stress and anxiety management skills through their classes
  • A whole child approach to social and emotional support, with a robust Counseling and Mental Health Team
  • A strong variety of course offerings in all content areas with an emphasis on supporting our students in identifying their career and/or college pathways and achieving their goals
  • A dynamic comprehensive high school experience including the revival of our amazing Kennedy traditions like the homecoming parade, school plays, community events; as well as, in-person participation in clubs, organizations, and athletics

We will continue to follow all health procedures necessary to keep our students safe. We know that being back in person for a consistent and supportive school day is positive for the social, emotional, mental and academic development of all students.  We look forward to welcoming back all Kennedy Commanders for in-person learning during the 2021-22 school year.

If your child has an extenuating circumstance due to a health condition or concern, Denver Public Schools will provide a one-year virtual school option in 2021-22.  Students who enroll in this option will be bound to that choice for the entire school year and will not be tied to their home school for 2021-22.  They will return in person to their home school for the 2022-23 school year.  DPS will share more information in the coming weeks.

Again, we look forward to continuing to serve your student(s) and seeing everyone back in-person for the 2021-22 school year.

Please check out the latest DPS Weekly for updates on vaccination sites for DPS students 16 and older and their families, health and safety protocols, and mental health supports for our community.
