Commander Communicator – Week of 4/26/21

Dear Commander Community,

Congratulations to our Student Board of Education for their stellar presentation during the SBOE 5280. Their workshop was engaging, extremely informative, and addressed the critical topic of building stronger relationships between students and teachers and how words, both positive and negative, can impact us in profound ways. Shout out to our students who participated in the Earth Day activities and the Day of Silence to stand up and out for our LGBTQ students and allies all around the world. Stay tuned for more tree planting opportunities next week to extend our Earth Day efforts.

Finals week is quickly approaching! Seniors will take finals from May 6th through May 11th, and all Senior grades will be finalized on 5/12. See below and our website for updates on all other Senior Celebrations and End of Year Events.

COVID CASES, VACCINES, & TESTING AT JFK

Cases: It is our priority to keep you informed of incidents related to safety. We want to make you aware that 2 students or staff members have been diagnosed with COVID-19. These individuals are remote; therefore, there was not a need to contract trace within our school building.

Each case of COVID-19 is interviewed by public health. As part of this public health investigation:

  • The person diagnosed is being kept home from school until they are no longer infectious.

  • The person’s activities when they could have spread COVID-19 were assessed.

  • The people who were close contacts of the person with COVID-19 are instructed to stay home from school for 10 days after the exposure. This is called quarantine.

If you have any concerns about your health, we encourage you to contact the Denver Health School Based Health Center at 303-602-8958 (or your primary care provider) for further evaluation and possible testing.

Testing: If you would like to sign your student up for a covid-19 test, please do so now. It’s free, fast, and convenient: https://www.primarybio.com/l/dpsosscreening. If you’d like to see the registration process, here’s a video that goes through each step.  If your student has been exposed to COVID-19 or is experiencing symptoms, they must be tested at a COVIDCheck Colorado drive-up testing site.  Please register for that one-time test here: https://www.primarybio.com/a/denverps.

Thank you for helping us keep our students, staff, and the broader community safe.

Vaccines: We will be administering the Moderna vaccine at JFK on Sunday, May 2nd. This vaccine is only available to individuals who are 18 or older.

Vaccines are offered at NO COST to all DPS students. The more students that get vaccinated against COVID-19 means safer schools for all DPS students. Please click here for more information on how to register.

Here other alternatives for 16 and 17 year olds to get vaccinated.
