Commander Communicator – Week of 3/22/21

Happy Friday Commander Community!!

I want to open with a reference to the quote I shared in this morning’s announcement by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “Darkness cannot drive darkness; Light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; Love can do that.” Despite the darkness that continues to arise in our worlds, from the Atlanta spa shooting to the seemingly endless isolation and grief we are feeling from the pandemic, and the oppression and violence that continues to occur against people simply because of the color of their skin, I want to encourage you to lean on your Commander Nation for support. Connect with a trusted teacher or staff member, reach out to your friends, and take advantage of the many social/emotional supports we have here at Kennedy.

Please take the time to complete the Wellbeing and Learning Survey by March 24th:

  • Students received an email on March 10th inviting you to take the survey via your DPS email address (studentnumber@dpsk12.net). Links are unique to each student and should not be forwarded. Reminder emails will also be sent to your student DPS email accounts. Email surveys@dpsk12.org if you need a new link.
    • Subject Line: Complete our Wellbeing, Learning & Superintendent Search survey by 3/24
    • You can also use this open access link https://survey.k12insight.com/r/8a0rmk to take the survey. If using this link, you will need to input their student ID.
  • The parent/guardian survey is anonymous and parents/guardians can use this link https://survey.k12insight.com/r/PfPXO3 to take the family survey.

Along the lines of social and emotional wellbeing, we are seeing that our students who feel comfortable returning in person, are finding more success all around. We are striving to ensure that all students feel safe and start to experience a little bit of high school “normalcy”. Please email me at tiffany_almon@dpsk12.org if you would like to switch from a virtual learner to an in person learner. All students should continue to take advantage of asynchronous office hours, office hours on Friday afternoons, the 24/7 online tutoring app, Paper.co, the SAT Prep Courses offered free and virtually, and the virtual Integrated Math 1 and 3 tutoring (info found below).

See here for an important update from our Interim Superintendent, Dwight Jones.

Have a Commander Kind of Weekend!

COVID CASES & TESTING AT JFK

Denver Health Vaccinations for Students: Denver Health can now order covid vaccines for students 16 years old and older if they work in a restaurant, fast food or grocery store. They are also available for students 16 and over with moderate persistent asthma.

The vaccines will be given at the downtown Denver Health location. Call 303-602-8958 to talk to a provider for more information!

COVID CASES: No new cases reported at JFK this week.

Covid-19 Testing at JFK: JFK is partnering with COVIDCheck Colorado to provide free, fast and convenient COVID-19 testing to all faculty, staff and students, not just those who may be experiencing symptoms. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 40% of people who are infected with the coronavirus show no symptoms. Regular testing is a critical step toward the safe and continued re-opening of our schools.

Each week, a segment of our population of students (who have opted in to the program) will be tested by DPS nursing staff. The in-school tests are done using saliva and results will be available within 24-36 hours.

The saliva protocol that COVIDCheck Colorado uses is SalivaDirect™, which is an FDA Emergency Use Authorization-approved PCR testing protocol. The Yale School of Public Health developed the protocol; the NBA used SalivaDirect™ in “the bubble” to test its players, and the protocol is being rolled out to other organizations, institutions, and populations around the country. Yale’s studies have shown that SalivaDirect™ PCR is as sensitive as a nasal PCR test and is both more convenient and comfortable for participants than a nasal swab.

If you would like to sign your student up for this ongoing testing program, please do so now. It’s free, fast, and convenient: https://www.primarybio.com/l/dpsosscreening. If you’d like to see the registration process, here’s a video that goes through each step.  If your student has been exposed to COVID-19 or is experiencing symptoms, they must be tested at a COVIDCheck Colorado drive-up testing site.  Please register for that one-time test here: https://www.primarybio.com/a/denverps.

Thank you for helping us keep our students, staff, and the broader community safe.

All students coming into the school building must take and pass the health screener here.
