Commander Communicator – Week of 02/08/21

Dear Commander Community,

As we continue to recognize and celebrate the great achievements and impact that Black people have had on our history and society, I urge you to think about how we can find meaningful ways to increase our inclusivity and equality every day of the year. As Commanders, WE ARE challengers of inequity, and we must work together to identify oppressive systems in our classrooms, in our hallways, in our community, in our city, and in our nation. Please join me in identifying and problem solving to become a school that consistently provides equitable opportunities for all students and families to step into their greatness by signing up to join the Principal’s Advisory Committee here. I will be sending out invites for a Friday Principal’s Advisory Committee meeting this upcoming week.  We are stronger together and your voice matters most!

The Vietnamese New Year or Tết is celebrated this Friday, this is “...the most important celebration in Vietnamese culture, Tet Holiday carries love and hope; signifies family and friend kinship; and promises a better year ahead”. Congratulations to Student Council and all the students who participated in Commander Contribution week. This was such a great way to bring back some of our traditions in a safe and fun way. I am looking forward to sharing how much money was raised this week. If we exceeded the $3,000 goal, I have committed to dying my hair blue:) Stay tuned.

Our pre-COVID bell schedule is from 7:30 am - 2:35 pm Monday through Friday; however, we are considering requesting to shift our bell schedule for the 21-22 school year to 8:00 am to 3:05 pm, since studies show that later start times are beneficial for the health and academic success of our students.

Before we request this shift we want to get input from our students, staff, and families to determine if this bell schedule shift would be a positive change for you. Please complete the quick survey FOUND HERE to provide input on the 21-22 bell schedule. 

For those of you returning in person, please remember to stick to your A, B, or C group, wear a mask over your mouth and nose everyday, take the health screener prior to arrival, wash your hands and use sanitizer at least 3 times a day and bring everything you need to be successful (device, headphones, charger, water bottle, class specific materials). UPDATES
  • No School: There will be no school for our students on February 15th due to President's Day and no school on February 16th due to a Teacher Professional Work Day. 
  • Parent Teacher Conferences: Mark your calendars! We will be hosting virtual Parent Teacher Conferences for this semester on March 3rd and March 4th from 3 to 7 PM. Details are coming soon!
  • Update for Seniors: Please find the latest update for seniors here. This was revised as of 2/5/21.
  • Paper Information Sessions: We are excited to share that Paper.Co will be hosting English and Spanish parent information sessions next week! These sessions are meant to inform parents on how students can use the platform and provide them with an opportunity to ask questions. The capacity for these information sessions will be limited, so parents will be asked to register via the registration links below.

  • College Readiness Info Night: Our Future Center will be hosting a college readiness info night on Tuesday, February 9th from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. Here is the link to join! This is a chance for parents to hear about the next steps after acceptance letters come in. We will cover: cost of attendance, loans, immunizations, housing, award letters and so much more.   • CEC Virtual Open House: Join us for CEC Virtual Open House on Thursday, Feb 11 from 4:30-6:30 PM. Learn more about our school, attend a Q&A, explore career programs, and meet staff.
  • Winning Wednesdays: Portal Activation and scholarship support

    For students who have already applied for college and want to know the next steps, Ms. Emily is hosting weekly sessions with college reps from the major  4 year universities for students to get personalized help applying for scholarships, logging into portals and setting up their email. Here are the details:

  • Interested in getting some Commander Wrestling gear?
    We are hosting an online store as a fundraiser for our wrestling team! If you end up purchasing anything please let Coach Anthony know which student you would like the credit to go to.

    A certain percent will go towards each wrestler, so if you purchase something email him at anthony_sandoval@dpsk12.org so he knows which student the credit should go to (for their shirt and face mask which is $50)

    Also, the store is only open for a week so next Wednesday the store will become inactive

Athletics: 

We are excited for the installation of our new Pixellot automated sports cameras this coming Monday, February 8th. The pixellot camera provides a high quality picture for live streaming, security, and film study as needed. Thanks to our district athletics department, we are now able to offer quality viewing for our fans and the greater Commander Community.

Upward Bound: The TRIO Upward Bound (UB) program at Colorado State University is a federally funded grant sponsored by the Department of Education. UB Participants receive one-on-one mentoring from professional staff advisors to guide them through post-secondary admission and financial aid processes. Upward Bound focuses on identifying qualified youth who are low-income and potential first-generation college students in order to support and encourage them in pursuit of post-secondary enrollment.  Staff assist high school students in developing academic, social, and leadership skills in order to prepare them for post-secondary rigors, success, and graduation. This competitive program is FREE for students who apply and get admitted.

  • C4HCO - Open Enrollment Begins Sunday, November 1! With spikes in COVID-19 cases and the cold and flu seasons at our doorsteps, it more important than ever to make sure all Coloradans have access to affordable health insurance. To do so, Connect for Health Colorado has spent the last couple of months making necessary changes for a successful, mainly virtual, eighth Open Enrollment Period. This year’s Open Enrollment period begins November 1, 2020 and ends on January 15, 2021. Here are some helpful reminders and virtual tools for you:
    • Web and print versions of resources are available to you free of charge through our Open Enrollment Online Toolkit and our Online Store.
    • Free, virtual, and in-person help is available from our certified Connect for Health Colorado enrollment experts located throughout the state. Click here to find assistance in your area.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

JFK has partnered with a local organization called Bondadosa Foods who has plugged our school into the Colorado Food Cluster. All of our families we will be contacted by Bondadosa in order to send an updated address where they can deliver weekly meals to any children in the household between the ages of 6-18. If you do not wish to participate in this program, you can opt out here under cancel.

Fresh Meal Delivery

The Colorado Food Cluster will deliver free meals directly to your home. These meals will be provided in boxes with enough dinners and snacks for seven days.

How To Sign Up

Our families will be pre-enrolled but families must provide current address once they receive a request via email or text from the Colorado Food Cluster. You can expect this sometime next week!

What to Expect from Deliveries

Each enrolled student will receive a weekly delivery of seven dinners and seven snacks. Delivery agents will follow public health guidelines to provide safe, contactless deliveries. You will be notified by text when the box arrives! Standard meals for students contain meat. Vegetarian meals can be provided upon request. Please visit www.coloradofoodcluster.com for more information, or to change or cancel your order. Questions?   • Chromebooks/Hotspots: Denver Public Library will be offering Chromebooks/Hotspots for 3-month checkout periods and it is open to anyone! Those interested will need to contact them at 720-865-2362 and leave a message or email nap@denverlibrary.org.
  • Chromebooks: If you are in need of a Chromebook you can pick them up at the school any weekday between 7 AM and 3 PM.
  • Hotspots: If you are in need of a hotspot please email laurentz_gilmore@dpsk12.org. We do not have many available but we are working on adding more to our inventory so for now, you will be put on a waitlist until we have more.
  • DoTS has been working with CenturyLink in regards to the issue of slow internet speeds on Chromebooks and have narrowed it down to newer modems that have built-in security features.  
    CenturyLink has created an email address specifically to provide customer service for families who may be experiencing slow network speeds on their DPS-issued Chromebooks.  
    For any families continuing to experience these issues, please have them email chromebook@centurylink.com for continued troubleshooting on their end.
  • Troubleshooting: Please contact laurentz_gilmore@dpsk12.org if you are having issues attending your courses in Schoology.
