Commander Communicator – Week of 1/18/21

Dear Commander Community,

“Clarity is Kindness” and we are striving to ensure that to all of our students, regardless of whether you will be returning to in person learning or staying at your home to learn. I want to be clear that no matter where you are learning, we are ONE Commander Community and We are Strong! Please read the updates below:

Here is the schedule for return for students who chose in person*, THE BELL SCHEDULE IS NOT CHANGING:

  • The Class of 2024 returns the week of 1/19
  • If you are in the A group, you come to school on 1/19 and stay home 1/20 – 1/22
  • If you are in the B group, you stay home on 1/19 and 1/20 and come to school on 1/21 and 1/22
  • If you are in the C group, you come to school on 1/19, STAY HOME on 1/20, come to school on 1/21 and 1/22
    1. The Class of 2023, 2022, 2021 returns on Monday 1/25
  • If you are in the A group, you come to school on 1/25 and 1/26 and stay home 1/27 – 1/29
  • If you are in the B group, you stay home on 1/25 – 1/27 and come to school on 1/28 and 1/29
  • If you are in the C group, you come to school on 1/25 and 1/26, STAY HOME on 1/27, come to school on 1/28 and 1/29

*We are staggering the return of our students to ensure safety of all returning students and staff

Where do I go when I arrive? If you do not yet know which entrance to line up between 7:30 and 7:50, contact your anchor cohort teachers.

Attendance: 

Whether you are remote or in person, if you log into your Meet links and participate in class, you will be marked present. If you log in but do not participate, you will be marked absent. If you are an in person student and do not want to come to school or cannot come to school, you will be marked present if you log in and participate in your classes.

What to bring:

  • Charged device (Chromebook, laptop, iPad, etc.)
  • Charger (just in case your device loses charge)
  • Water bottle
  • Headphones (if you don’t have any, we have some for you to borrow)
  • Any other class materials your teacher requires
  • A bag to carry your stuff (we won’t have lockers)

What if I have an off period? If you have an off period 7 or 8, leave campus after period 5 or 6 if possible. If you have an off period 5 or 6, you may choose to come to school only for your 7 or 8 at 12:45 OR you can go to room 103b by my office for your off period. You may not leave and come back during the same day.

What if I have a CU SUCCEED class? You go to 219 for this class.

What if I arrive late? All late students must check in at the main office and enter through the main entrance.

What if I arrive early? You can stay warm in the cafeteria and enter through the south doors from 7:00 to 7:25, then line up at 7:30 with your anchor cohort.

Return to in person safety rules (if these rules are not followed, you will be asked to leave campus immediately and log in for remote learning at your home for the rest of the day):

  1. All students must take and pass the HEALTH SCREENER before arriving at school, if you fail the health screener STAY HOME and participate in remote learning 
  2. All students will line up at their ANCHOR COHORT entrance (location to be communicated to you this week) and wait for your Anchor Cohort teachers to take your temperature and lead you up to class
  3. Students will stay in their Anchor  Cohort classrooms for Asynchronous learning
  4. Students will transition to their live synchronous classes for IN PERSON instruction (when teachers are in person, if the teacher is remote there will be a proctor supporting the students in person while the teacher is remotely teaching)
  5. Students will be able to transition to lunch 
  6. All students must wear a mask over your nose and mask throughout the day 
  7. All students and staff must stay at least 3 feet away from one another
  8. Students must be at least 6 feet away from one another during lunch
  9. We will have assigned seats during classes in order to be able to effectively contact trace
  10. We will have a CLOSED lunch with assigned seats in order to be able to effectively contact trace
  11. BRING A WATER BOTTLE! Students may use the water fountains to refill water bottles, but may not use them to drink from
  12. No more than 17 students per class
  13. No more than 50% of our student body may attend on any given day

We recommend that you take a COVID test weekly. Information on scheduling your free test here. All of this information will be shared with you during your Anchor Cohort this week, so don’t panic if you are confused. We will have a Town Hall this Wednesday from 5 -6 pm HERE.   • There will be no school on Monday, January 18th in order to honor the MLK Holiday.
  • JFK Picture Day Retakes: Picture Day Retakes will be taking place on January 22nd from 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM in the JFK Auditorium.

    You will need to make an appointment in order to attend and you can do so here.

    If you are a remote student coming in to get your photo taken, please enter the auditorium from the teacher parking lot doors. If you are an in person student, please make your appointment during the 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM asynchronous time block. 
     
  • JFK Virtual Town Hall: Please join us for out virtual town hall on Wednesday, January 20th at 5 PM. You can join the meeting HERE.
     
  • MLK Day Parade: At DPS, in Denver and across the nation, we are honoring the legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., though celebrations may look different this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 36th annual Denver Marade -- a march and parade -- is being held virtually, and will continue long-standing traditions while adding panel discussions on civil rights supported by the Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Colorado Holiday Commission. Students from across Colorado, including from our own East High School and Denver Discovery School, participated in a pre-recorded discussion in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day for the Marade.

    The virtual Marade begins at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 18 and can be watched on Youtube or on Facebook. Learn more about upcoming celebrations of Dr. King and his legacy on our website.

  • Free Tutoring Reminder: JFK has a partnership with Paper.Co in order to offer free online tutoring to all of our students. Students can log in and access free 24/7 tutoring by logging in with their DPS credentials (the same credentials they use to log into Schoology). Please reach out to your anchor cohort teacher if you have additional questions!
  • Principal's Advisory Committee: STUDENTS, if you are interested in elevating student voice to make Kennedy the greatest high school in Denver, please apply to the Principal’s Advisory Committee here.

Athletics:

Season B CHSAA Sports Begin Jan. 18
The Athletics Department is excited to announce the return of Season B CHSAA high school sports beginning Jan. 18. This includes boys and girls basketball, girls swimming and diving, ice hockey, wrestling, and spirit.

In order to maximize opportunities for our students and create the safest possible environments for our students to participate, spectators will not be allowed at this time. As health conditions in our community continue to improve, we will revisit that decision and share updates as they are available. If you have questions, please contact the athletic director at your school.

PRIDE Celebration: Our PRIDE Celebration will be shown during anchor cohort classes on Thursday, January 28th. 

Senior Parking Spots: This year we are not only allowing Seniors to reserve parking spots for FREE, we are also starting a new tradition of painting senior parking spots! Interested Seniors need to fill out this form and share it with Mr Aichele by 1/22/202.

Wish Week: This year, instead of Wish Week, we are having Commander Contributions week from February 1-5. We will be fundraising for JFK's own Covid Relief Fund. We have planned to do events such as pie in the face, hair dying/shaving, and pennystalls. With the Covid-19 restrictions we have the safety of our students and staff in mind, while also trying to still put on events.

  • C4HCO - Open Enrollment Begins Sunday, November 1! With spikes in COVID-19 cases and the cold and flu seasons at our doorsteps, it more important than ever to make sure all Coloradans have access to affordable health insurance. To do so, Connect for Health Colorado has spent the last couple of months making necessary changes for a successful, mainly virtual, eighth Open Enrollment Period. This year’s Open Enrollment period begins November 1, 2020 and ends on January 15, 2021. Here are some helpful reminders and virtual tools for you:
    • Web and print versions of resources are available to you free of charge through our Open Enrollment Online Toolkit and our Online Store.
    • Free, virtual, and in-person help is available from our certified Connect for Health Colorado enrollment experts located throughout the state. Click here to find assistance in your area.

IN-PERSON/VIRTUAL LEARNING UPDATE

Health and Safety Reminders for Returning Middle and High Schoolers

We are excited to welcome our middle and high school students back to in-person learning for the first time since last school year! (And as a reminder, the Virtual Program will continue throughout the second semester for families who chose that option. Families whose students attend a charter school should check with their school for updates on their plans.)

Here are some important reminders and resources so you know what to expect and how to stay safe:

It’s important to be aware that all middle and high school classes will be required to have assigned seats for students, as a safety precaution that can help minimize the need for quarantining in the event of a positive case in the class. This may be a shift from what students are accustomed to, but using consistent seating charts will help us keep everyone safe.

All students coming into the school building must take and pass the health screener here.

Having trouble finding your anchor cohort class? Here is a resource that can help!

Same as last week:

  • Chromebooks/Hotspots: Denver Public Library will be offering Chromebooks/Hotspots for 3-month checkout periods and it is open to anyone! Those interested will need to contact them at 720-865-2362 and leave a message or email nap@denverlibrary.org.
  • Chromebooks: If you are in need of a Chromebook you can pick them up at the school any weekday between 7 AM and 3 PM.
  • Hotspots: If you are in need of a hotspot please email laurentz_gilmore@dpsk12.org. We do not have many available but we are working on adding more to our inventory so for now, you will be put on a waitlist until we have more.
  • DoTS has been working with CenturyLink in regards to the issue of slow internet speeds on Chromebooks and have narrowed it down to newer modems that have built-in security features.  
    CenturyLink has created an email address specifically to provide customer service for families who may be experiencing slow network speeds on their DPS-issued Chromebooks.  
    For any families continuing to experience these issues, please have them email chromebook@centurylink.com for continued troubleshooting on their end.
  • Troubleshooting: Please contact laurentz_gilmore@dpsk12.org if you are having issues attending your courses in Schoology.
