Commander Communicator – 11/16/20

Dear Commander Community,

“You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” -- A.A. Milne.

Commanders, as we roll into the week before a week-long break (starting 11/23/20), I want to take a moment to remind you that you have the skills, the perseverance, and the heart to overcome whatever challenges come your way. But, if you need support, we are here to help. Please check out the numerous resources available for support that we have available to you at JFK by clicking here. Additionally, please remember that your teachers are available during asynchronous class time and office hours on Friday from 2:25 to 3:10 to provide you with small group support. All students can also access 24/7 tutors that speak Spanish and English for tutoring in any of your subject areas. Simply go to and log in through Google using your DPS login credentials. Reach out to me or another trusted administrator or BAM squad member during school hours as another layer of support and guidance.

Parents and guardians, we offer several ways for you to get involved and/or learn more about how to connect as a Commander Community and learn how to better support your student at home. See below for resources that you can utilize to stay more informed. Please complete this survey to let us know times/days that you are available to participate in Town Halls and topics you would like to discuss, currently Town Halls meet every other Wednesday here from 5 - 6PM. Additionally, if you’d like to join our PTSA, Commander Connection, or our ELA PAC (English Language Acquisition Parent Advisory Committee) please email

In light of the most recent announcement sent from Superintendent Cordova regarding her decision to leave the district (read here for details), I want to let you know that we will continue on our trajectory towards achieving our vision and accomplishing our goals. Remember, we are so much STRONGER TOGETHER, so please get connected if you are not already. Have a Commander kind of week!

With love and gratitude,

Tiffany Almon

  • IMPORTANT UPDATE on Picture Days: When you arrive for Picture Day, please park in the order in which you arrive and stay in your car until it is your turn.  A staff member will come let you in when it is your turn. If you are being dropped off, please stand on the blue anchors only. This will ensure students stand 6 feet apart while waiting to get their photo taken. We will work toward only allowing 2 students in at a time when taking their yearbook photos. Remember, this event is optional!

Each day will be one grade only, they are listed below.  Photos will be 7:30 AM – 11:00 AM in the Gym. We will excuse students from Study Hall if needed. Students will use the student parking lot to access the cameras. Masks are required and will only be removed to take the photo.

  • DoTS has been working with CenturyLink in regards to the issue of slow internet speeds on Chromebooks and have narrowed it down to newer modems that have built-in security features.
CenturyLink has created an email address specifically to provide customer service for families who may be experiencing slow network speeds on their DPS-issued Chromebooks.
For any families continuing to experience these issues, please have them email for continued troubleshooting on their end.
  • Snow Days: In the event of inclement weather that would require closure of DPS buildings and offices, all K-12 students will have a remote learning day. Our students have already lost so much learning time due to the COVID-19 crisis. Our students lost two weeks around spring break last school year, when the crisis hit. We started this school year a week late, and there have been countless instructional hours lost in the transition from in-person to remote learning. We also know that for most of our students who are currently learning remotely, a snow day is no different than a normal remote learning day. With that in mind, DPS feels it’s critical to do whatever we can to maximize academic instruction and support for our students, even on days when students and staff can’t report to school for in-person learning.
  • Behavior Strategies for Parents: As we adapt to this new normal, we understand that parents are juggling a lot. In an effort to support parents, DPS has created this document to house resources that might be helpful during this time.
  • Remote Learning Center: We know that the news of the extension of remote learning for the rest of the semester was not ideal for everyone. We understand that many of our students are struggling and are in need of in person support. This opportunity was shared with us and we are thrilled to offer this resource to our students! The Boys & Girls Club is starting up a learning lab at College View Rec Center. Program and enrollment details can be found here.

Hours at College View will be from 8:000am – 4:00pm.

They will have internet access and support for online classes. Breakfast, Lunch, and a snack will be served. Their staff will provide brain breaks and additional programming while out of classes and during breaks (art, athletics, STEM, social recreation, etc.) Enroll now!

And please share this resource with anyone who might benefit.
  • Troubleshooting: Please contact if you are having issues attending your courses in Schoology.
