Commander Communicator – 11/09/20

Dear Commander Community,

"Education is the movement from darkness to light.” - Allen Bloom

I know that during these dark times, it is hard to find light; but, please know that at Kennedy we are working hard to figure out ways to bring joy and hope to our students and families despite decisions that have been made in regards to the COVID 19 Pandemic. Some examples of these attempts of illuminating and cultivating joy and hope occurring semester 1 are:

  1. We are planning a Kennedy Remote Learning Center for a small number of students who chose in person to return the week before Thanksgiving Break, the week of 11/16, and through the end of semester 1. We are identifying these students based on need, if they have a consistent attendance rate, and if they would truly benefit from coming to Kennedy each day to work and learn in a stable environment with consistent Internet and support from an educator.

  2. The Election Watch Party and interview with Chalkbeat -- see JFK STUCO featured here

  3. The JFK Horror Film Festival live streaming on November 13th

  4. The Lift Every Voice and Sing Virtual Choir Performance

  5. Athletics Interest Night -- go here on Tuesday at 5pm

  6. The Commander P.R.I.D.E. Podcast, happening bi-monthly during Anchor Cohort

  7. Commander P.R.I.D.E. Celebrations, happening monthly during Anchor Cohort

  8. Morning Warm Welcomes during Anchor Cohort

  9. The NHS Induction Ceremony

In order to ensure all of our students have clear and reliable wireless Internet to access their learning and fun engagement events, we have been distributing T-Mobile Hotspots. However, we are now out of hotspots, and really need those of you who are not using the hotspot that was distributed to you to please return the hotspot to the main office. You can do so any weekday between 7 and 3 PM. Thank you so much for your help in getting hotspots in the hands of the students who need them and who will use them.

As always, Commanders, we are STRONGER TOGETHER, so send me your feedback, OR BETTER YET, attend the bi monthly Town Hall meeting occurring on Wednesday HERE. Have a Commander kind of week!

With love and gratitude,

Tiffany Almon
Proud Principal

  • Environmental Tip of the Week from the JFK Environmental Club:
Did you know that Americans consume 1,500 plastic water bottles per second? Can you imagine the effect this waste has on the environment? Plastics are made out of polyethylene terephthalate that require lots of fossil fuel to create. In addition, they never truly go away and only 1 in 6 plastic bottles are recycled. You can help reduce this waste by reusing water bottles and avoiding throwing out bottles after one use. Join the Commander Environmental club every Thursday at 3:20-4:00pm to help take action in the fight against climate change, and make a difference!

  • C4HCO - Open Enrollment Begins Sunday, November 1! With spikes in COVID-19 cases and the cold and flu seasons at our doorsteps, it more important than ever to make sure all Coloradans have access to affordable health insurance. To do so, Connect for Health Colorado has spent the last couple of months making necessary changes for a successful, mainly virtual, eighth Open Enrollment Period. This year’s Open Enrollment period begins November 1, 2020 and ends on January 15, 2021. Here are some helpful reminders and virtual tools for you:

  • Chromebooks: If you are in need of a Chromebook please email to request one. If there are any available, you can pick them up at the school any weekday between 7 AM and 3 PM.

DoTS has been working with CenturyLink in regards to the issue of slow internet speeds on Chromebooks and have narrowed it down to newer modems that have built-in security features.
CenturyLink has created an email address specifically to provide customer service for families who may be experiencing slow network speeds on their DPS-issued Chromebooks.
For any families continuing to experience these issues, please have them email for continued troubleshooting on their end.
  • Snow Days: In the event of inclement weather that would require closure of DPS buildings and offices, all K-12 students will have a remote learning day. Our students have already lost so much learning time due to the COVID-19 crisis. Our students lost two weeks around spring break last school year, when the crisis hit. We started this school year a week late, and there have been countless instructional hours lost in the transition from in-person to remote learning. We also know that for most of our students who are currently learning remotely, a snow day is no different than a normal remote learning day. With that in mind, DPS feels it’s critical to do whatever we can to maximize academic instruction and support for our students, even on days when students and staff can’t report to school for in-person learning.
    • Same as last week:

    • Remote Learning Center: We know that the news of the extension of remote learning for the rest of the semester was not ideal for everyone. We understand that many of our students are struggling and are in need of in person support. This opportunity was shared with us and we are thrilled to offer this resource to our students! The Boys & Girls Club is starting up a learning lab at College View Rec Center. Program and enrollment details can be found here.

Hours at College View will be from 8:000am – 4:00pm.

They will have internet access and support for online classes. Breakfast, Lunch, and a snack will be served. Their staff will provide brain breaks and additional programming while out of classes and during breaks (art, athletics, STEM, social recreation, etc.) Enroll now!

And please share this resource with anyone who might benefit.
    • New Schedule: We made one small schedule adjustment based off of some feedback we received from teachers and students. Schedule changes are reflected here
    • Superintendent Cordova announced that DPS Secondary Schools (middle and high) are delaying the return to in person learning until at least 11/9/20 EXCEPT for students who are in Center Based Programs like the Multi Intensive Program, the Multi Intensive Severe Program, and the Affective Needs Program who will return to in person learning at Kennedy on 10/21 if those students chose to return in person. See Supt. Cordova’s full message here

    • Troubleshooting: Please contact if you are having issues attending your courses in Schoology.

    • Behavior Strategies for Parents: As we adapt to this new normal, we understand that parents are juggling a lot. In an effort to support parents, DPS has created this document to house resources that might be helpful during this time.
