Commander Communicator 10/19/20

Dear Commander Community,

Despite our ever-changing world, the turbulence and devastation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, shifts that we have had to make as a result of decisions to remain remote at least until November 9th (with the exception of our MI, MI-S, and AN Center Based students who will return on 10/21), our priorities remain the same: focus on building strong relationships and connections with our students and families, support the differentiated needs of our students, and provide excellence in instruction.

IN ORDER TO ACCOMMODATE FOR THE RETURN TO IN PERSON LEARNING ON 11/9, THE SCHEDULE IS SHIFTING FOR Q2 beginning on Wednesday 10/21 though THE END OF THE YEAR . Click on this LINK to see the Q2 Schedule, and see our website at, as this schedule BEGINS Wednesday the 21st when you return from Fall Break.

A note on attendance: Attendance is required and taken for all students during the Anchor Cohort Warm Welcome from 8 to 8:30 each day. Students will use the time between 8:30 and 10:30 to complete asynchronous assignments, meet with their teachers, and check in with their Anchor Cohort teachers to communicate their progress. Attendance will be taken again during each LIVE SYNCHRONOUS CLASS. If you cannot make your live synchronous class, you must communicate with your teacher AND submit any work that was completed during the live synchronous and asynchronous class that day within 24 hours.

Hopefully many of you were able to attend virtual conferences with our teachers and staff members on Wednesday and Thursday. Developing a school to home connection is critical to our students’ success, especially during this time when we are not together at JFK! Parents and Guardians, if you were not able to connect with teachers and staff during conferences, feel free to reach out to teachers via email to get updates on your child’s progress AND check Schoology often.

Our first in person community engagement event is our Homecoming Car Parade happening next Saturday the 24th from 11am to noon. This is a socially distanced event in which students are required to wear masks, and only same-household students are allowed to be in the same vehicle. Just like in year’s past, only registered organizations can participate in the parade. Spectators can cheer on our student organizations, athletes, and clubs along the route shown below while staying socially distanced.

JFK Administration holds Wednesday Town Halls for students and families to ask questions and give feedback, meet us here from 5 - 6 pm on Wednesdays. We are SO MUCH stronger together and need your input and want to answer any questions you may have about our return to in person plan.

With love and gratitude,

Tiffany Almon
