Commander Communicator – 8/17

From The Principal's Desk
Dear Commanders,

Welcome to Engagement Week, the week before school officially begins on August 24th. This week you should expect to hear from at least one staff member from Kennedy. The purpose of these calls is to connect with you and ensure you know exactly what to expect as we embark on the historical and epic 20-21 school year. Please also take this time to complete your summer homework and attend the Town Hall meeting on Wednesday from 5 -6 by following this link.

If you have not yet registered, you must register immediately regardless of whether you would like to choose the virtual option through December 2020. Follow the steps outlined here to register now.

If you need a Chromebook or Internet access, please complete this form. We will have a tech distribution in our student lot from 8 am to 4 pm on Thursday 8/20.

Finally, please remember to keep Victoria Vialpando (Tori) in your prayers as she continues to recover from injuries sustained from a drive by shooting in a park near Valverde last summer.

Please reach out with questions and concerns. We are here to serve you and we are stronger together!

With love and gratitude,
Tiffany Almon
Proud Principal
  • CHECK OUT THE SCHEDULE: Our block schedule described in the updates below. We know that limiting the number of classes our students need to focus on each semester will allow our students to excel in a remote environment, build stronger relationships with their teachers and peers, and have opportunities to accelerate their learning. We are also hoping to get our students back into brick and mortar asap; and the block model allows us to flex between remote and in-person classes with ease and safety.

  • TOWN HALL Meeting on Wednesday the 12th from 5 -6 PM. Please attend to ask questions about the schedule, getting connected with Schoology, and creating a positive learning space while remote learning.

  • Health and Safety Requirements for in-person learning:  In partnership with CDPHE, DPS has identified Health and Safety requirements, including the wearing of masks, handwashing, and other specific notes, that will be in place when we are in the hybrid and full-time in-person learning contexts.  Information is available at

  • During the week of 8/17, please complete your summer homework assignments linked here

  • The official start of the school year is now 8/24, and will be remote at least until 10/16 when Superintendent Cordova works with CDPHE and the City of Denver to make a decision regarding rejoining in-person.
  • New Classes Available —  Click the link to access the interest survey!
    1)    Latinos in Action – Leadership class where you will work at an Elementary School to help children who are learning English as a second language, are struggling with reading or other subjects, or simply need a good role model. As a part of the class, LIA students will receive training in leadership, teaching methods, mentoring, job skills, and college preparation.
    2)    Ethnic Studies - It will be taught by a professor at JFK and you will learn Multi-disciplinary survey of contemporary and historical research analyses of the diverse social, economic, political, and cultural facets of African American, American Indian, Asian American, and Latino communities and cultures. You will earn 3 college credits and JFK pays for the course.
    3)    Criminal Justice - It will be taught by a professor at JFK and you will learn an overview of the criminal justice process and the criminal justice system in general. You will earn 3 college credits and JFK pays for the course.
    4)    Environmental Sustainability - This course has the potential to bring together a diverse group of students with interests in biology, chemistry, and/or environmental studies, and it gives students the opportunity to lead their own learning, collaborate, and gain skills needed to communicate their creative solutions.

For those families who have still not registered for this upcoming school year, we have mailed out registration packets. Please fill out the forms and return them to the school no later than Wednesday, August 19th between 1 and 3 PM.

Again, the safest and most efficient way to register is through our online process which can be found in both English and in Spanish here. If you haven't already done so, please complete the steps outlined in this document.

The deadline for registration is approaching on August 24th and we want to ensure that any families who may need support through this process can get access to it. That is why we are offering the following dates for an in-person registration:

  • 8/17 — Walk-Up Registration
  • 8/18 — Walk-Up Registration
  • 8/19 — Walk-Up Registration
  • 8/20 — Walk-Up Registration
  • 8/21 — Walk-Up Registration

This process will take place in the student parking lot off of Brown Place. We will have all families remain in their cars while they fill out hard copies of the registration documents and ask that they stay until a staff member ensures that they have filled out all the necessary documentation to complete the process. If possible, please have your parent portal login credentials handy just in case we need them!

Thank you for your continued patience as we work through our sports and athletics programs for the upcoming school year. There have been numerous changes and uncertainties surrounding a return to sports this fall, and we are in frequent communication with CHSSA on when and how we can safely resume these activities. CHSSA has shared their Activities Calendar as approved by Governor Polis. Denver Public Schools has approved the start of Boys Golf, and is in the process of reviewing Cross Country, Boys Tennis and Softball.

We expect to make a final decision on the three sports under review after working with Denver Health officials on health and safety protocols. The current health crisis continues to evolve, and we will look at other sports programs nearer to their anticipated start dates. As always, we will keep you updated as we learn more.
