Military Sciences
The mission of the JROTC is to motivate young people to be better citizens. Students
will recieve instruction in Leadership Theory and Application, Foundations for Success,
Wellness, Fitness and First Aid, Geography and Earth Science, Citizenship, and American
History, and Firearm Safety and Rifle Marksmanshp. Students are required to wear a uniform
once a week. JROTC provides students with opportunities to be members of competitive drill
and rifle teams and to achieve success in various levels of leadership positions within
the program. Completion of one semester fulfills a semester of PE requirements.
Course Descriptions
ROTC 1, LET 1 - The first semester of an eight-semester program. The first
year cadet is introduced to ethical values, principles of good leadership and how to
communicate effectively with others. Cadets are also taught how to work effectively as a
team member. Sub courses offered during this semester include Citizenship in Action,
Leadership Theory and Application, Foundations for Success, and Marksmanship Safety. For
grades 9-12. NO prerequisite.
ROTC 2, LET 1 - The second semester of an eight semester program. During the
second semester cadets receive instruction in Wellness and Fitness with intervention and
prevention on substance abuse. Instruction covers the value of a physical exercise,
conditioning, proper diet and personal hygiene. Cadets are taught citizenship through
history, developing communication skills, first aid and life saving skills and familiarization
with road maps, topographical maps and compass. The JROTC cadet may advance to the rank of
corporal by the end of the first year. For grades 9-12. Student must complete ROTC 1 before
taking this class.
ROTC 3, LET 2 - The third semester of an eight semester program. The second
year cadet is given positions of greater responsibility in leadership roles. During this
semester academic instruction focuses on wellness, fitness, first aid, leadership application,
service learning, and community service. Cadets will be introduced to small group instruction
and how to manage their groups. For grades 10-12. Student must complete ROTC 2 before
taking this class.
ROTC 4, LET 3 - The fourth semester of an eight semester program. In the LET 2
second semester cadets are prepared for the LET 3 level. Cadets who show leadership
potential will begin to learn about leadership position and roles within the JROTC program. Instruction
will focus on citizenship in American History and Government, Leadership Application,
Geography, more advanced map skills, environmental awareness, service learning, community
service and physical fitness assessment. For grades 10-12. Student must take ROTC 3 before
taking this class.
ROTC 5, LET 3 - The fifth semester of an eight semester program. The LET 3
first semester focuses on leadership application and leadership strategies. By this time
most LET 3 cadets are serving in a leadership position and are required to manage other
cadets in a classroom environment. Instruction focuses on Leadership strategies in teamwork,
decision making, supervising, and mentoring; and in academic areas of financial management,
the value of insurance, better writing skills, and better speaking skills. For grades 10-12. Student
must complete ROTC 4 before taking this class.
ROTC 6, LET 4 - The sixth semester of an eight semester program. The LET 3
second semester continues with Leadership Application and active participation in leadership
performance. Cadets are required to lead junior cadets in the classroom and in several
activities such as: physical conditioning, drill and ceremonies, inspection procedures and
small group instruction. Academic instruction focuses on career planning, social
responsibilities, citizenship, and more leadership strategies. For grades 10-12. Student
must complete ROTC 5 before taking this class.
ROTC 7, LET 4 - The seventh semester of an eight semester program. The fourth
year cadet is usually heavily involved in the JFK Battalion operations in some form of a
leadership position. These cadets perform of myriad of tasks developed to prepare them for
future management and leadership roles in the civilian/military world. In this semester
LET 4s are preparing for their annual battalion inspections. Instruction during this semester
includes: Information about the Armed Forces, Leadership Principles, and elective sub-courses
covering wilderness survival and resume development. For seniors only. Student must complete
ROTC 6 before taking this class.
ROTC 8, LET 4 - The eighth semester of an eight semester program. The second
semester is the final semester for LET 4s in the JROTC program. This semester culminates
with a formal/informal inspection which is 100% run by LET 3/4 cadets. For LET 4s this
is their graduation final in JROTC and is usually a testament of what they have learned in
much of the JROTC instruction over the last 4 years. Academic instruction consists of:
Investment of money in savings and mutual funds, teaching skills, fitness, cold weather
protection, rope skills, map reading and portfolio development. For seniors only. Student
must complete ROTC 7 before taking this class.
Lady Commanders Drill Team - This course coveres JROTC instructional material
listed under the main JROTC heading. In addition, this course prepares young ladies for
competitive drill-performances at the local and regional levels. Lady Commander Members are
also involved in community service and community presentations supporting JROTC. For grades
9-12. Student must have their JROTC instructor's permission in order to take this class.
Men's Drill - This course covers JROTC instructional material listed under the
main JROTC heading. In addition, this course prepares young men for competitive drill
performances with rifles at the local, regional, and national levels. Men's Drill Members
are also involved in community service and community presentations supporting JROTC. For
grades 9-12. Student must take 1 semester of JROTC, and have their JROTC instructor's
permission in order to take this class.
JROTC Marksmanship - This course covers JROTC instructional material listed
under the main JROTC heading. In addition, this course instructs students in rifle and
marksmanship safety, marksmanship techniques and competitive marksmanship procedures. This
course is a beginner's course for new marksmanship. For grades 9-12. Student must have
their JROTC instructor's permission to take this class.
Honor Platoon Drill - This course covers JROTC instructional material listed
under the main JROTC heading. In addition, this course prepares young ladies for
competitive drill performances at the local, regional, and national levels. Honor Platoon
Members are also involved in community service and community presentations supporting JROTC.
